Meet Laura Whiteley, Trainee
After finishing my Geography degree at the University of Manchester and subsequently completing my GDL in Chester, I went travelling for several months. I had just three days after getting back from South America to move back to London and start my traineeship. I was so worried I might have forgotten everything I'd learnt! However, as soon as I started my training contract, I knew it would all be ok, as everyone, from the other trainees through to associates and partners, was really nice and approachable.
I was plunged into the deep end from the very beginning. While I was in my first seat in Property within the Commercial Development and Investment team, I was given lots of client exposure and responsibility and worked on my own lower values matters too. I have a lot of partner interaction in my current seat in real estate finance, which is great for improving my ability and also for getting to know people within the firm.
The internal network you create here is so valuable. I am really looking forward to getting started on my third seat as I'm off to Dubai to work mainly in construction litigation, with some corporate, tax and private capital too. I'm incredibly excited that I have the opportunity to do this during my training contract.
Gowling WLG really appreciates you for being an individual and all the differences you bring to the firm, so when you're applying make sure you focus on those aspects. I applied because I liked the relatively small number of trainees and the reputation for being a genuinely nice firm.
I'd suggest speaking to as many people as you can in the industry to really build up your knowledge so you truly know what you are applying for – and the vacation scheme also offers a really good insight into the firm too.
