Meet Leanne Spencer Harper, Trainee
I haven't had a conventional route into Law, I studied Political Science and Spanish at Azusa Pacific University in California, which included a semester abroad at Oxford University and a semester abroad at Complutense University of Madrid.
After completing a vacation scheme, I got the impression that Gowling WLG was a really friendly place to work. My first impression of the firm has been spot on. I never feel like I'm working alone or without support. I expected that there would be moments of triumph as well as more challenging moments, but the fact that there is a supportive network behind me makes it easier to tackle issues head on and encourages me to gain exposure to as much as I can.
My first seat was in Real Estate and I'm currently working within the Corporate team for my second. Real Estate is a very process-driven seat, and from day one I was given the responsibility of managing transactions from start to finish. It was amazing to be given so much client contact and responsibility as a first seat trainee. Corporate is a lot more team orientated. There are fewer transactions, and they are more high value and more multi-faceted. As a trainee it's great experience to get involved in such complex, high-profile work.
New trainees are given amazing opportunities by the firm; I never feel like a tiny cog in a massive wheel. I really enjoy that I get the chance to work with people at all levels in the firm. The firm is incredibly non-hierarchical, and everyone is very approachable. There is a real feeling that everyone is in the same boat together. I know the firm is committed to building me into a great lawyer and really cares about my development.
