What’s your background?

I trained at a regional firm in Cambridge and moved to Gowling WLG in March 2017, six months after I qualified.

My preference has always been for transactional work and I enjoy the fast-paced nature and team camaraderie that comes with corporate transactions, as well as the adrenaline rush!

Why did you choose to work here?

Gowling WLG has an excellent reputation and further plans for international expansion, which means it's an exciting time to be joining the firm. There is also greater opportunity for cross-border transactions or deals with an international element.

Recently I have had international experience on a variety of transactions involving tax havens such as Jersey, Guernsey and the BVIs. I have also advised on transactions with Swedish, Dutch and US elements.

What was the recruitment process like?

My first interview was with two corporate partners. It was technical at times but they mainly wanted to find out why I was looking to move firms and to discuss my experience to date. My second interview was with two different corporate partners and was slightly more technical than the first in terms of drilling down into my role and previous work experience.

I found the interviews testing but informative, and learnt a significant amount about the firm and the business from the partners I met. This enabled me to make an informed decision when deciding to join the firm.

What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?

There is a strong culture within the firm. I felt welcomed from day one and have found it very easy to slot into the team, helped by the approachability of the partners.

The team advises on a broad range of work so there is ample opportunity to develop technically across different areas of corporate law.

Since I joined the firm there have been various secondment opportunities for junior lawyers, offering the chance to see how a client operates its business day-to-day or to witness the role of legal teams within regulatory or other professional service companies.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about working here?

The quality of the meeting room cakes!

What do you do outside work?

Socialise with friends and family, exercise and travel.
