What’s your background?

I read law at King's College London and spent some time working abroad after graduating before pursuing a career in law.

My first seat was in Specialist Real Estate Services, where I was involved primarily in landlord and tenant work – often with a specific focus on data centre transactions. I am currently completing my second seat in Commercial Litigation, where I assist on a wide-range of commercial disputes and manage my own finance-recovery case files.

Why did you choose to work here?

I was very impressed by the quality of the firm's clients, its growth in recent years, and its reputation for being a great place to work. Everybody I met (on the winter vacation scheme) was friendly and approachable, and – most importantly – I had a great time! The vacation scheme gave me an excellent insight into the firm and made me realise that I definitely wanted to train here.

What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?

The Gowling WLG culture is defined by high achievement, teamwork and trust. There is a strong emphasis on contributing good ideas and sharing key information across all levels, which really makes the firm stand out from its competitors. The leadership team is easily accessible, and the CEO and Chairman hold regular 'Firmwide Forums' to answer questions from all Gowling WLG employees. This is not a firm where progression is based on hierarchy – it is a firm with a truly innovative approach; one that instils confidence in its people and in which your success is encouraged and supported from the outset.

What was the recruitment process like?

I followed the vacation scheme route to apply for a training contract. This involved an online application form, telephone interview and finally an assessment centre.

I found the recruitment process to be very transparent and actually quite enjoyed it. My advice to those applying for a vacation scheme or a training contract would be:

  1. First, understand the firm through a process of considered research.
  2. Second, understand commercial awareness – this doesn’t mean memorising random business news stories, but knowing how these stories connect to the wider geopolitical and macro-economic landscape, and how they might affect a leading international law firm like Gowling WLG.
  3. Finally, understand yourself – know your key strengths and determine why Gowling WLG is the right fit for you.

What's the most surprising thing you've learned about working here?

Several of my teammates possess diverse backgrounds. There are people for whom law is a second career, talented musicians and artists, published authors, and individuals who have lived and worked all over the world. There is a real mix of characters and personalities, and everyone brings a unique perspective to the firm. This makes it a great place to socialise and interact.

What do you do outside work?

Walking my cat (although the cat chooses the direction and pace of travel and basically takes charge of the entire exercise!), spending time with friends and family, or curled up on the sofa with a good novel.
